The Garden

The sunny, walled garden behind the museum is made up of a series of small beds each with its own character.

The glasshouse and wishing well were designed by Lavender Beard and made by Roger Church of Swinbourne Brothers.  The  glasshouse has a good collection of mature cactus in handmade pots by Mark Beard.  The repurposed oil tank base is used for spring and summer bedding and there is a small vegetable patch with a plum tree.  Further on there is a physic garden next to a shady spot.  The raised end of the garden, built on the rubble of a demolished cottage, has trees and a succession of perennials and there is a narrow bed of flowering shrubs in the east facing bed to complete the circle.   Cannas, ginger lilies, geraniums and fuchsias in pots add colour.

During the winter we now have a good selection of named snowdrops donated by a local breeder when his collection was dispersed.  These are open for viewing during February.

This sunny garden has plenty of benches for relaxing and a large marque which is useful for both shade and rain and is used during the music festivals  and other events.
